Agent Spotlight: Kyle Rule

Agent Spotlight: Kyle Rule

Kyle Rule is a land agent in Central and West Central Indiana, and East Central Illinois. Kyle’s family owns a six generation farm and he now raises club lambs on that land. He is passionate about all aspects of farming from agriculture to livestock.

“I love working with all different property types, but my specialty is definitely farmland. I consider myself a ‘dirt snob.’ I love to look at the soil types and topographies of the different farms because they are all so unique and have so much to offer!”

We sat down with Kyle to learn more about how he got into real estate and what keeps him motivated. Here’s what he had to say:

What did you do prior to entering into real estate?

“I went to Purdue University and graduated with a degree in education, and that is where I started my career. I coached and taught for five years before I realized that my passion was actually tied to the land. I was spending all of my free time working on my farm, and I just knew that the next step needed to take me into the agricultural field, pun intended.

I took an appraisal position in farm credit, and it was instantly a natural fit! Over the next decade, I worked in farm management, got my real estate license, and worked my way up to one of Farmers National’s top ten land agents.”

What is your favorite part about working in real estate?

“Analyzing the farm, breaking it down, looking at all of its unique features, soil types, drainage, irrigation, etc. Those are the key factors that you have to focus on. I have an engineering brain, I like spreadsheets and putting numbers to it and breaking it all down so I can see where a farm needs improvement. Analyzing and evaluating in order to better a piece of land is thrilling to me.”

What inspires you to be the best that you can be in this industry?

“I have a background in sports and showing livestock, and that has fed my competitive spirit. I always want to be the best that I can be, and on top of that, I want to continually improve myself and my career. I want to do better next year than I did this year.

That’s not to say that I’m all about the numbers. I want to be better for my clients year after year. I want my clients to look at me as a knowledge base and a genuinely helpful agent. It is truly fulfilling to help people with something that they may not understand as well as I do, and in this industry, I’ve made it my goal to become the expert!.”

What aspect of your specialty do you find most interesting?

“There are two sides of the coin and I find them both interesting. On one hand, when I have the opportunity to help a buyer, I love the chase of a farm. It is a thrill to know what they are looking for, and find them the perfect fit.

On the other hand, when I’m working with a seller, I love to dive into the numbers and comps and find the best way to list their property so that they get the best value for their farm.

I want to stay transparent and up-front with my clients. I try to be honest and reasonable about farm values instead of spewing inflated numbers just to land a new client. I really care about my clients, and I want them to view me as someone who will be honest, knowledgeable, and helpful.

Helping people is the root of my job, and I take that seriously.”

What do you do in your free time?

“I have four young kids between the ages of 3 and 10, and they keep my wife and I very busy! Just like I did, they show club lambs in 4H at county, state, and national levels. We are also involved in community outreach with the neighboring children who may not have access to lambs or knowledge to participate in showing, so we help them as much as possible. I love to see the youth involved in agriculture at such early ages. I was fortunate to be raised on a farm, and if I can help children that may not have that background get involved, I’ll do it!

Sometimes I feel like I am a glutton for saying yes: I’m on the school board too! We are also huge fans of the Purdue Boilermakers! I graduated from Purdue, and I’m an avid sports fan, so my family and I love cheering them on. Boiler up!”
